Choose the Right Next Step

Whether you still need the 90-hour course, want extra help getting exam ready, or you're already licensed elsewhere — choose the Idaho exam prep path that fits your situation.

Preparing for the Idaho Real Estate Exam

The Idaho real estate exam is a multiple-choice test administered by Pearson Professional Assessments at testing centers across the state. You can browse nearby exam locations from our statewide city pages resource, or jump directly to local pages for Boise, Idaho Falls, or Coeur d’Alene.

The exam has two sections — a national portion covering general real estate principles and a state portion focused specifically on Idaho law, regulations, and commission rules. Both sections must be passed with a 70% score or better in a single sitting, so make sure you’re prepared before scheduling your exam.

Most students find that the coursework itself provides strong foundational preparation, since the curriculum is designed around the same topics that appear on the exam. The difference between passing and failing usually comes down to how much additional practice you do after finishing the course — particularly with practice exams, flashcards, and focused review of weak areas like real estate math and legal descriptions.

When Should You Start Studying for the Idaho Real Estate Exam?

Most students begin focused exam prep during Module 2 of the 90-hour coursework, once the foundational concepts from Module 1 are in place. By that point you've covered property ownership, agency, and contracts — and you can start reinforcing those topics with practice exams and flashcards while the material is still fresh.

If you've already completed your coursework, don't wait. Schedule your exam within two to three weeks of finishing. The longer you wait, the more material you'll need to re-study. Students who sit for the exam within a month of completing their education consistently perform better than those who delay.

If you haven't started your education yet, exam prep is built into most course packages — the Standard tier and above include unlimited practice exams with a readiness indicator, so you don't need to purchase prep separately.

Failed the Idaho Real Estate Exam?

It happens — and it doesn't mean you're not cut out for real estate. Most students who fail do so because of specific topic gaps, not overall lack of preparation. The data on this page shows you exactly which areas have the highest error rates so you can focus your retake prep where it matters most.

You can retake the exam after 24 hours. The fee is $83 per attempt, and if you only failed one section, you have one year to pass it without retaking the other. There's no limit on retakes.

What to Know Before Test Day

Key details from the PearsonVUE Idaho Candidate Handbook that most students don't see until they're at the testing center.

Two forms of current signature ID — primary must be government-issued with photo AND signature (driver's license, passport). Secondary needs a signature only (credit card, Social Security card).
Name must exactly match your registration — no nicknames, no abbreviations.
Your confirmation number from when you made the reservation.
Nothing else. No phones, watches, wallets, notes, pens, books, or personal calculators. Everything goes in a locker before you enter.
Expired IDs are rejected — PearsonVUE does not recognize grace periods, even if your state does.
Arrive 30 minutes early — you'll check in, be photographed, and sign a Candidate Rules Agreement.
A free tutorial on the testing computer is available before the exam starts — the time doesn't count against your 4 hours.
An on-screen calculator is provided — personal calculators are not allowed.
Scratch materials are provided at the center. You cannot write on them before the exam begins or take them when you leave.
Breaks are allowed — raise your hand, but the clock does not stop. You cannot leave the floor or building.
You leave with your score — official results are printed immediately after you finish.
The score is scaled, not a percentage. A score of 70 does not mean you got 70% correct — it's a statistical adjustment that accounts for differences in difficulty between exam versions.
5–10 "pretest" questions are mixed into the exam and look identical to scored questions. They don't count toward your score. Answer everything — don't skip anything that seems unusual.
Both sections must be passed in one sitting. If you fail one section, you only retake that section — but you must pass it within one year of the date you passed the other.
The one-year clock matters: you must pass both sections AND submit your license application within one year of your first passed section. Miss that deadline and you retake the entire exam.
43,560 square feet per acre — not available at the test center. Must be memorized.
5,280 feet per mile — also not available. These two numbers appear in multiple calculation types.
Proration details are given in the question — you don't need to memorize whether to use 360 or 365 days or who gets the closing day. The question will tell you.
Round to the nearest whole number where applicable using standard rounding rules.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about Idaho exam prep, standalone study options, out-of-state scenarios, and when to schedule your test. For step-by-step licensing help, see our Idaho Licensing Process Guide. If you still need the full 90-hour course, compare Idaho real estate classes.

Choosing the right path
Do I need separate exam prep if I’m buying a prelicense package?
No. If you are starting your Idaho real estate license from scratch, exam prep is already included in most prelicense course packages. Standard packages and above typically include practice exams, readiness indicators, and extra study tools, so most students do not need to buy separate exam prep unless they are taking classes through another school.
Can I buy Idaho exam prep without buying the full course?
Yes. If you already completed the required coursework elsewhere, you can purchase standalone exam prep without buying the full prelicense package. This is usually the best fit for students who want more practice exams, readiness tracking, and topic-by-topic review before scheduling the Idaho exam.
Out-of-state and timing
Do out-of-state agents need the full exam or only the Idaho portion?
Many out-of-state agents may only need to pass the Idaho-specific portion, but it depends on your license status and eligibility. Idaho may waive the national portion for certain active license holders from other states while still requiring the Idaho state-specific section. For details on waiver paths and next steps, see our Out-of-State Agents page.
How soon should I schedule the exam after finishing the course?
Most students should plan to take the exam within a few weeks of finishing the course, while the material is still fresh. A common approach is to spend 1 to 3 weeks reviewing and taking practice exams, then schedule once practice scores are consistently at passing level. You can also review nearby testing locations from the Idaho city pages.
